Numerology vs Astrology: What Is the Difference and Which Should You Use?

Numerology works with your name and date of birth; Vedic astrology works with your full kundli. How each one works, what each needs, and how to choose between a numerology bracelet and a birth chart bracelet.

Numerology vs Astrology: What Is the Difference and Which Should You Use?

Reiki is a complementary practice. It supports relaxation and well-being and may help you feel better, but it does not diagnose, treat or cure any illness. Please keep following your doctor’s advice and medicines.

Two old systems, one goal

Both numerology and astrology try to describe a person's nature and the phases of life. They start from different information.

Numerology: the power of numbers

Vedic numerology (Ank Shastra) links each number from 1 to 9 with a planet. It mainly uses:

  • Psychic or birth number (Moolank): the day you were born, reduced to one digit. Born on the 23rd? 2 + 3 = 5.
  • Destiny or life path number (Bhagyank): your full date of birth added up and reduced to one digit.
  • Name number: the letters of your name turned into numbers.
  • Lo Shu grid: a 3 × 3 grid filled with the digits of your date of birth, showing which numbers are present, repeated or missing.

What you need: your name and date of birth. No birth time.

Astrology: the map of the sky

Vedic astrology (Jyotish) reads the kundli, a chart of where the Sun, Moon and planets were at the moment you were born. It shows the 12 houses of life, your lagna (ascendant) and the timing of planetary periods (dashas).

What you need: date, exact time and place of birth.

Side by side

  • Based on: numerology uses your name and date of birth; astrology uses your date, time and place of birth.
  • Birth time: not needed for numerology; needed, as exact as possible, for astrology.
  • Main tools: numerology uses the Moolank, Bhagyank, name number and Lo Shu grid; astrology uses the houses, planets, lagna and dashas.
  • Good for: numerology suits lucky numbers, name correction and quick personal guidance; astrology suits a detailed life reading and timing.
